Three questions…
Marcya talks about how it is important to look at the history of the music we listen to, and the role of music in sharing emotions through genres and time. Do you know how the music you like to listen to came to be? How could you find out?
When Marcya was growing up, she says her family supported creative expression. Are there ways that your family, friends and teachers help you express your own creativity?
In elementary school, Marcya didn’t think she was a good singer, but things changed by the time she got to middle school, and that started her on her career as a vocalist. Can you think of a time you tried something, but it didn’t go well at first? What did you do?
Performance
“My Funny Valentine” – Marcya selected the jazz standard “My Funny Valentine.” The song was first performed as a show tune in 1937, and performed and recorded by hundreds of musicians since then. The message of the song has to do with appreciating someone as they are.
