Story Spotlight
Kate Pelham Newcomb
Doctor of the Northwoods
1885–1956
Kate Pelham Newcomb’s path to achieving her dream of becoming a doctor was far from smooth, but she didn’t let that keep her from working to make it happen. As a physician in the northwoods of Wisconsin, reaching her patients sometimes meant trekking through the snow, or canoeing across water to get there. Kate helped thousands of patients, eventually helping to build a hospital to better care for her community.

“We must include a variety of perspectives to make history fascinating enough for our students to make a connection. This collection helps instill curiosity about the past, shows that the improbable can actually become possible; and may even inspire the life of the learner.”
